200,000 seats available at £59 return

Keep on bucking the “bah humbug” habit and book one of our 200,000 seats at £59 for a January jaunt to the Continent.

We’re all used to feeling the pinch in January, even if it’s normally the pinch of a waistband after too many Christmas pies. This year though you may well be feeling it more in your pocket than just in your paunch.

Don’t go on that credit crash diet yet though. On top of our 200,000 seats available at £59 return we’ve got a whole heap of hints and tips on how you can cast off the spectre of the dreaded downturn in Paris and Brussels.

1. Getting there
Book one of our £59 return fares by clicking here, where you’ll find a calendar showing all the dates when this great ticket price is available.
Tip: You’ll probably have more luck finding availability on days when others are less likely to travel, so for a short city break you might, for example, like to consider travelling out on a Thursday and returning on the following Saturday.

2. Getting around
In Paris
Get with the pedal people in Paris on the Vélib bike service, which allows you to pick up and drop off bicycles throughout the city at over 700 locations. Not only is it just about as green as transport gets, it’s also kind to your wallet, with day tickets costing just 1 euro and the first half an hour on each bike free.

In Brussels
Hop on a tram, bus or tube to take advantage of the highly reliable (not to mention reasonably priced) public transport system. A day card costs just 3.80 euro, while a 3 day pass is a snip at a mere 9 euro.

3. Getting busy
In Paris
Every Winter in Paris’ Place de Hôtel de Ville the space outside the town hall is converted into an ice rink, creating a sight and atmosphere so idyllic it’d melt the heart of even the most frosty politician. Pay a mere 5 euro for skate hire, or bring along your own and get in completely free.

It may seem a little macabre, but Paris’ Père Lachaise Cemetery is actually a truly fascinating spot to while away a few morbid moments. Pick up one of the free maps showing the final resting places of such cultural luminaries as Oscar Wilde, Marcel Proust, Jim Morrison and Edith Piaf, or simply wander the paths and appreciate one of the most peaceful places in Paris.

In Brussels
The Théâtre Royal de Toone on the Petite Rue des Bouchers is famed for its cheap puppet plays, all put on in the Bruxellois dialect of Marollien. It’s the ideal place to soak up some true Brussels culture, while at the excellent bar you can also soak up a wide range of authentic Belgian beers.

4. Getting gifts
In Paris
Every Friday at 15:00 you can catch up on the very latest in Parisian mode at the Galeries Lafayette weekly fashion show. What’s more Eurostar travellers are entitled to a 10% discount on all purchases throughout the store by simply showing their Eurostar ticket at the till.

Meanwhile after your stroll around the Père Lachaise Cemetery, lighten the mood with a touch of bargain hunting at the nearby Porte de Clignancourt flea market. Located just north of Montmartre it’s one of the largest markets in Europe and is the perfect place to hone your haggling skills on the hunt for chic yet cheap treats.

In Brussels
The Belgian capital boasts enough markets to excite even the most hardened bargain hunter; from the huge food market held every Sunday morning at Brussels-Midi/Zuid (the very station where our trains arrive), to the smaller but no less impressive daily flea market on Place du Jeu de Balle, you’ll have no trouble digging out some great deals.

5. Getting Zzzz
After a hard day pounding the Parisian streets or bargain hunting in Brussels, you’ll surely be in need of somewhere to rest your weary head. And, in keeping with the rest of your economy holiday, we’ve got some great packages to help you recharge your batteries without getting charged through the nose.
